Gitttes' associates attempted to tell him that Evelyn was in the adjacent office with the door closed, but he was so anxious to tell the new joke he just heard at the barbershop he just wouldn't take the time to listen to them. Gittes should have made sure that there wasn't anyone else in the office before he told the inappropriate for womans ears "Chinaman" joke, but he was careless and did not do so. This attempts to show that Gittes is careless and rash in his decisions. Take for example when Gittes goes to the reservoir late at night and gets ambushed by the 2 thugs. A cautious person only would have gone there late at night with another person. Gittes should have brought one of his associates with him under those circumstances. But, Gittes is careless and does not exercise appropriate caution. He gets his nose severely cut as a consequence.
